Madrid acoge el primer encuentro mundial de jóvenes pastores
Una nueva generación toma el relevo para defender el pastoralismo como solución a los grandes desafíos ambientales y sociales del siglo XXI
Jóvenes pastores de 33 países se reunirán en España en uno de los eventos más destacados del Año Internacional de los Pastizales y los Pastores 2026
Madrid se convertirá este mes de abril en la capital internacional del pastoralismo al acoger uno de los eventos europeos más relevantes del Año Internacional de los Pastizales y los Pastores 2026 (IYRP 2026).
El encuentro internacional “IYRP Young Pastoralists Global Gathering & New Technologies” se celebrará del 9 al 11 de abril en el Instituto de la Ingeniería de España, reuniendo a cerca de 200 participantes, entre jóvenes pastores, investigadores, responsables de políticas públicas y representantes de organizaciones internacionales.
La iniciativa ha sido impulsada por IMIDRA (Instituto Madrileño de Investigación y Desarrollo Rural, Agrario y Alimentario) y la Fundación Trashumancia y Naturaleza, con la colaboración de la FAO (Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura) y CIHEAM Zaragoza, y el apoyo de Fundación Biodiversidad (fundación pública del Gobierno de España adscrita al Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico), Red Eléctrica de España , Fundación Entretantos y la International Land Coalition (ILC).
Gracias a esta alianza institucional, el encuentro se ha consolidado como una de las citas europeas más importantes dedicadas al pastoralismo durante este año internacional declarado por Naciones Unidas.
1. UN ENCUENTRO GLOBAL PARA LA NUEVA GENERACIÓN DE PASTORES
Uno de los aspectos más destacados del evento es la participación de jóvenes pastores procedentes de 33 países de África, América, Asia y Europa. Muchos de ellos son líderes en sus comunidades y representan a la nueva generación llamada a garantizar la continuidad de las tradiciones pastoriles adaptándolas a los retos del siglo XXI.
El encuentro pone el foco en el relevo generacional, la innovación y el papel de las nuevas tecnologías en los sistemas pastorales, abordando uno de los grandes desafíos de las regiones pastorales en todo el mundo: asegurar la continuidad de una forma de vida milenaria, reforzando al mismo tiempo su sostenibilidad ambiental y su viabilidad económica.
Durante tres días de debates, presentaciones e intercambios, Madrid se convertirá en un espacio de diálogo donde pastores y expertos compartirán conocimientos y experiencias para fortalecer los sistemas pastorales, especialmente el pastoralismo móvil y la trashumancia, prácticas reconocidas por la UNESCO como parte del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
2. EXPERTOS INTERNACIONALES Y LÍDERES PASTORILES
El evento contará con la participación de destacados expertos internacionales en pastoralismo y gestión de pastizales, así como de numerosos jóvenes pastores de referencia:
- Ilse Köhler-Rollefson, científica alemana y especialista mundial en pastoralismo
- Gregorio Velasco, coordinador de la plataforma Pastoralist Knowledge Hub de la FAO
- Bálint Sándor, experto en conocimientos ecológicos tradicionales del Centro de Investigación Ecológica de Hungría
- Kunduz Adylbekova, representante de la International Land Coalition y miembro del grupo de jóvenes pastores de Asia Central
- Georgios Ziagkas, representante de los pastores trashumantes de Grecia
- Verónica Apaza, representante de las artesanas textiles de lana de la red Red Puna (Argentina)
- Jacob Lekaitogo, coordinador del grupo de jóvenes pastores de la Global Alliance for Rangelands and Pastoralists
- Tamara Mitrofanenko, secretariado de la Convención de los Cárpatos del Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente
- Maya Sherpa, representante de los pastores del Himalaya en Nepal
También participarán expertos de instituciones como la Global Alliance for Rangelands and Pastoralists, ICOMOS, CIHEAM, la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) y la Sociedad Española para el Estudio de los Pastos (SEP).
- Construir una voz global de los jóvenes pastores
Uno de los principales objetivos del encuentro es la elaboración de una declaración conjunta de jóvenes pastores, que será presentada en la COP17 de la Convención de Naciones Unidas de Lucha contra la Desertificación (UNCCD), prevista en Mongolia en agosto de 2026.
Además, el evento busca:
- Fortalecer las redes internacionales de jóvenes pastores
- Promover sistemas ganaderos ecológicamente sostenibles e inclusivos
- Impulsar cadenas de valor basadas en razas ganaderas locales
- Fomentar la innovación y las tecnologías apropiadas para el pastoralismo
- Promover enfoques de conservación integrales que protejan biodiversidad, ecosistemas, razas locales y conocimientos tradicionales
4. ACTIVIDADES DE CAMPO Y PROGRAMA CULTURAL
Además de las sesiones de trabajo en Madrid, los participantes realizarán una visita de campo a la histórica Casa de la Monta del IMIDRA en Aranjuez, donde se celebrarán demostraciones técnicas, exposiciones y actividades culturales para mostrar el patrimonio vivo del pastoralismo y la trashumancia.
Como antesala del encuentro, CIHEAM Zaragoza organizará los días 7 y 8 de abril una reunión técnica sobre sistemas ganaderos sostenibles.

Nineteen years after the first global meeting of mobile pastoralists, young pastoralists around the world gather in Madrid to champion pastoralism as a solution for the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century.

Madrid will become the international capital of pastoralism this April as it hosts one of the most significant European events of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 (IYRP 2026).
The international meeting “IYRP Young Pastoralists Global Gathering & New Technologies” will take place from 9 to 11 April at the Institute of Engineering of Spain, bringing together 200 participants, including young pastoralists, researchers, policy experts and representatives of international organisations.
Originally promoted by IMIDRA (Madrid Institute for Rural, Agricultural and Food Research and Development), and Fundación Trashumancia y Naturaleza, with the collaboration of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and CIHEAM Zaragoza, and the support of Fundación Biodiversidad (public foundation of the Spanish Government, attached to the Ministry of the Environment), Red Electrica España, Fundación Entretantos and theInternational Land Coalition (ILC), the initiative has become one of the most important gatherings in Europe dedicated to pastoralism during this UN-designated international year.
A global meeting for the next generation of pastoralists
One of the most remarkable aspects of the event is the strong participation of young pastoralists from 33 countries across Africa, America, Asia and Europe. They all are leaders in their communities and represent the new generation responsible for carrying forward pastoral traditions while adapting them to the challenges of the 21st century.
The meeting focuses on generational renewal, innovation and the role of new technologies in pastoral systems, addressing one of the major challenges facing pastoral regions worldwide: ensuring the continuity of a millennia-old way of life while strengthening its sustainability and economic viability.
During three days of discussions, presentations and exchanges, Madrid will become a space where pastoralists and experts share knowledge and experiences aimed at protecting and strengthening pastoral systems—particularly mobile pastoralism and transhumance, practices recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The event will feature internationally recognised experts in pastoralism and rangeland management, as well as many outstanding young pastoralists:

Experts from institutions such as the Global Alliance for Rangelands and Pastoralists, ICOMOS, CIHEAM, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and Spanish Society of Rangelands (SEP) will also contribute to the discussions.
Building a global voice for young pastoralists
A key objective of the gathering is the preparation of a joint declaration by young pastoralists, which will be presented at COP17 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to be held in Mongolia in August 2026.
The event also aims to:
- Strengthen international networks of young pastoralists
- Promote ecologically sustainable and socially inclusive livestock systems
- Support value chains based on local livestock breeds
- Encourage innovation and appropriate technologies for pastoral systems
- Promote holistic conservation approaches that protect biodiversity, ecosystems, local breeds and traditional knowledge

Field activities and cultural programme
Alongside the conference sessions in Madrid, participants will take part in a field visit to the historic Casa de la Monta at IMIDRA in Aranjuez, where technical demonstrations, exhibitions and cultural activities will showcase the living heritage of pastoralism and transhumance.
As a prelude to the event, CIHEAM Zaragoza will organise a technical meeting on sustainable livestock systemson 7 and 8 April.
